To the Salzkammergut Lakes with Stern & Hafferl

Most of the DVDs I have produced from my video recordings show the early 1990s, but the scenes on this DVD are from early August 2008.

Stern & Hafferl GmbH was formed in 1883 to provide electricity to homes & businesses in Oberösterreich, but it quickly became involved in railway construction and operation. In 1894 the company built and electrified the metre gauge Gmundner Strassenbahn. Investment in railways i n the region has continued to the present day and there are now plans to link and extend the Gmundner Strassenbahn and the Traunseebahn. Of particular interest to railway fans is the Stern & Hafferl policy of acquiring, refurbishing and using second-hand vehicles on many of its services: the result is a rich variety of equipment from various European sources.

On this DVD we travel entirely on Stern & Hafferl routes beginning from Lambach, on the main Westbahn route, and ride on the standard gauge Vorchdorferbahn (8 mins) and the metre gauge Traunseebahn (17 mins) to Gmunden. Here we board a vintage tram (GM 5 from 1911) for the 2.3km trip to the Hauptbahnhof before retracing our route back to Lambach (21 mins).

A separate trip takes us to the Attergaubahn where we travel between St Georgen and Vöcklamarkt and visit Attersee to watch the regular services and a vintage special hauled by ex-Pressburgerbahn ET 20.104 from 1914 (27 mins).

Information on these and other Stern & Hafferl services is available from www.stern-verkehr.at

Questions
If you have any questions on this DVD please ask me by E-mail to twolambs@nslamb.co.uk. I may not have every answer, but, through my membership of the Austrian Railway Group, I probably know someone who does.

Technical Notes

The digital video camera I used on this occasion was a Panasonic NV-GS 120. Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
