Four Excursions with Gölsdorf’s 310.23

Wien - Sopron : Wien - Bratislava : The Donauuferbahn : Linz - Graz

The scenes on this DVD were recorded during several visits to Austria in the early 1990s.

We joined Gölsdorf’s elegant locomotive on three excursions and watched one from lineside:-

  • The excursion to Sopron was hardly under way when 52.7612 failed at Bruck a/d Leitha. From there 310.23 coped well with a 13 coach train (with diesel 2050.02 providing assistance when necessary). At Sopron we boarded diesel railcar 5144.04 for a second excursion to Oberloisdorf.
  • The trip to Bratislava was punctuated with a visit to Das Heizhaus, Strasshof, where many Austrian steam locomotives are preserved. On arrival in Bratislava we were treated to a city tour on a vintage tram: our day concluded with a visit to Bratislava’s ‘locomotive graveyard’.
  • To fully appreciate the grace of Gölsdorf’s 310.23 it is essential to observe it from lineside running at speed: the 2.14 m driving wheels seem to roll effortlessly along the tracks. We intercepted an excursion running along the north bank of the Danube (the Donauuferbahn) and filmed it as it negotiated the pretty Strudengau where the river squeezes between some picturesque hillsides.
  • Finally a trip from Linz to Graz took us over two of Austria’s lesser known passes, the Phyrnbahn and the Schoberpass. On a rainy morning, in spite of slipping on the wet rails when starting, 310.23 found each steady climb well within its capabilities with a five coach train.
