Some recent memories of
Jenbach & the Zillertalbahn

Most of the DVDs I have produced from my video recordings show the early 1990s, but the scenes on this DVD are from July 2007.

The Zillertalbahn narrow gauge line that runs from Jenbach to Mayrhofen is well known to many tourists. Its twice-daily summer steam service receives coach-loads of visitors who are usually transported in reserved carriages over part of the line in one direction only. Fortunately the steam specials are typically 12 – 15 coaches long and the rail enthusiast can usually find a quiet coach to take in the Zillertal scenery and the flavour of a modern narrow gauge operation that serves many passengers and carries significant volumes of freight from the wood yards along the line.

We begin by looking around the Zillertalbahn part of Jenbach station and cross to the north side of the ÖBB’s main line (The Westbahn) to observe the vintage Achenseebahn rack engines at work. Our Zillertalbahn engine today is No 5 ‘Gerlos’ (KrL 1521/1930) which is of similar design to the class Uh engines (later class 498) built for the BBÖ by Krauss Linz. At Jenbach and along the line we see the variety of new and not-so-new diesels and diesel railcars that the Zillertalbahn uses for its regular services. We cross several trains in the station loops, noting both 2 and 3 car diesel units and loco-powered push/pull trains. We watch arrivals and departures at Mayrhofen before boarding the return train to Jenbach. We end our trip with a cool beer in the Achenseebahnstuberl, from where we again watch the old rack engines.

Questions
If you have any questions on this DVD please ask me by E-mail to twolambs@nslamb.co.uk . I may not have every answer, but, through my membership of the Austrian Railway Group , I probably know someone who does.

Technical Notes

The digital video camera I used on this occasion was a Panasonic NV-GS 120. Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
