Austrian Railway Memories Video from a rail enthusiast Some recent memories of the Steyrtalbahn & the Murtalbahn |
|
Most of the DVDs I have produced from my video recordings show the early 1990s, but the scenes on this DVD are from July 2007.
I was fortunate to travel on the Steyrtalbahn before its closure in 1982 so I enjoy refreshing those fading memories. My July 2007 visit to ride on the Steyrtalbahn Museumsbahn found restored Class 298.102 in charge of the weekend steam services between ÖGEG’s works at Grünburg and Steyr Lokalbahnhof. This engine dates from 1888 and is one of the original ‘Steyrtalbahnloks’ built by Krauss in Linz. It served the line until 1973 and after a period dumped at Obergrafendorf it was acquired for restoration. General repairs were carried out at Cluj in Roumania and the engine returned to Steyrtalbahn service in 2004. If you wish to visit this line you can find ÖGEG’s timetable details at http://www.oegeg.at/index.php.
Unlike the Steyrtalbahn, the Murtalbahn remains operational with the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen providing a regular rail service along the Mur valley between Tamsweg and Unzmarkt. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays summer steam specials, ‘Dampfbummelzüge’, are run. In this DVD, which features the first narrow gauge superheated engine built in Austria (Krauss Linz Bh1 from 1905), we follow the Tuesday run from Murau to Tamsweg (the return run is on Wednesday). Timetable details are available at www.stlb.at/fahrplan/fahrplan.htm

Technical NotesThe digital video camera I used on this occasion was a Panasonic NV-GS 120. Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!price £10.00Order online
