Rail DVDs from Norman Lamb

Video from a rail enthusiast
The Narrow Gauge Lines serving Gmünd NÖ
and The Waldviertel

The first part of the DVD shows Class 298.207 taking a morning train from Gmünd to Gross Gerungs. The route south from Gmünd (around 500m above sea level) includes ‘The Little Semmering’ where gradients as steep as 26 ‰ must be climbed to cross the central European watershed between the Danube and the Elbe near Bruderndorf (at 806m) before descending to Gross Gerungs (679m). This journey is then shown again, but from lineside with Class 399.02 in charge of the afternoon train.

The second part of the DVD shows the lines north of Gmünd to Litschau and to Heidenreichstein. The route runs close to the Czech border. Trains usually stop at Neu Nagelberg and/or Alt Nagelberg to allow passengers to visit the famous glass factories. Alt Nagelberg is where the routes diverge, but the tracks continue in parallel for a few km before heading their separate ways.

As a rail fan I try to support the lines I visit by riding on their services. I hope that, by including video footage taken on the move, I can leave you with a better impression of my experiences than can be gained from those who rely on filming by ‘train chasing’ alone.

If you have any questions on this DVD please ask me by E-mail to twolambs@nslamb.co.uk. I may not have every answer, but, through my membership of the Austrian Railway Group , I probably know someone who does.

Technical Notes

.
The material on this DVD has been copied from S-VHS tapes recorded in the early 1990s using a Sharp VL-S860. A few titles have been added, but there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
