The Ybbstalbahn

The first part of this DVD (21 mins) shows recently restored Class Yv2 Krauss/Linz 3357/1896 (ÖBB 598.02) with a steam special on the western end of the Ybbstalbahn between the terminus at Waidhofen an der Ybbs and the town of Gross Hollenstein. Along the way we enjoy two ‘run past’ experiences and we cross regular passenger trains hauled by Class 2091 and 2095 diesels.

The second part of the DVD ( 35 mins) shows the other end of the line – the now closed ‘bergstrecke’ (mountain section) over the watershed between the Ybbs and Erlauf rivers. Class NÖLB U1 Krauss/Linz 3709/1898 (ÖBB 298.51) hauls us up the gradient from Kienberg Gaming across two trestle viaducts on the way to the summit at Pfaffenschlag before taking on water and coasting down to Lunz. Much of the return journey is spent on the balcony of the coach closest to the locomotive.

As a rail fan I try to support the lines I visit by riding on their services. I hope that, by including video footage taken on the move, I can leave you with a better impression of my experiences than can be gained from those who rely on filming by ‘train chasing’ alone.

Questions
If you have any questions on this DVD please ask me by E-mail to twolambs@nslamb.co.uk. I may not have every answer, but, through my membership of the Austrian Railway Group , I probably know someone who does.

Technical Notes.

The material on this DVD has been copied from S-VHS tapes recorded in the early 1990s using a Sharp VL-S860. A few titles have been added, but there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
