The Feistritztalbahn

Most of the DVDs I have produced from my video recordings show the early 1990s, but the main scenes on this DVD are from early August 2008.

The Feistritztalbahn is one of the few remaining narrow gauge lines with revenue earning freight services. The line was opened between Weiz and Birkfeld in 1911 to serve various quarrying operations, eventually reaching Ratten where brown coal was mined. Today the only remaining freight service is operated by the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen from the Talksteinwerk at Anger to Weiz where loads are transferred to standard gauge wagons for onward shipment.

Passenger traffic consists solely of tourist trains that run from Weiz to Anger and up the Feistritz valley to Birkfeld where Club U.44 has its sheds. There are steam hauled services on autumn Saturdays, summer & autumn Sundays, & summer Thursdays to Birkfeld and a diesel service to Anger on summer Mondays – see www.feistritztalbahn.at for timetable details and other information on this interesting line.

The locomotive seen on this DVD is Yugoslavian 0-8-0 83.180 built by Duro Banovic in 1949. The loco was purchased by Club U.44 from Kohlenbahn Bankovici in Bosnia in 2001, but retains its Yugoslavian identity. The design, for the provincial railways of Bosnia and Herzogovina, was by Krauss Linz.

To supplement the 52 minutes on the Feistritztalbahn, this DVD concludes with 10 minutes of snippets of the Steyrtalbahn filmed in 1988 & 1989.

Questions
If you have any questions on this DVD please ask me by E-mail to twolambs@nslamb.co.uk. I may not have every answer, but, through my membership of the Austrian Railway Group, I probably know someone who does.

Technical Notes

The digital video camera I used on this occasion was a Panasonic NV-GS 120. Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
