More Steam Excursions

‘Into the Salzkammergut’ & ‘Over the Semmering Pass’

The Salzkammergut excursion ran several times during 2008 as a part of the region’s promotion of tourism. Restored Prussian Class P8, (today Österreichische Gesellschaft für Eisenbahngeschichte (ÖGEG)’s Class 638.1301) made a return journey between Attnang Puchheim and Bad Ischl, with an intervening ‘Pendelzug’ run between Bad Ischl & Gmunden. We filmed the engine running onto its train of 2-axle coaches at Attnang Puchheim and followed it on its first journey to Bad Ischl. We then boarded and enjoyed the return trip to Gmunden. The recordings have been merged together to tell a continuous story, so please don’t be puzzled by the station clocks! (running time is 38 mins)

The Semmeringbahn excursion was one of several runs during 2004 which commemorated the 150th anniversary of the famous route which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 10th October seven steam engines, supported by two vintage electrics and one ageing diesel hauled 4 trains over the 897m high pass. We travelled to Mürzzuschlag in a 14 coach train composed of Brenner & Brenner (B&B)’s ‘Blue Train’ stock: this was hauled by the B&B Cl 77.250 & Cl 33.132. We then witnessed the ‘traditional’ parade around the turntable and looked in on the Südbahn museum before returning to Vienna. The other steam engines used on the day were ÖGEG’s 12.14, B&B’s 919.138, 50.1771, 52.1227 & 52.7612: Krokodil 1102.102, Cl 1020.47 & Cl 2050.02 provided support. (running time is again 38 mins)

Technical Notes

The digital video camera I used was a Panasonic NV-GS 120.
Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
