Lineside from Feldkirch to Vienna - Part 4

The scenes in this series of 4 DVDs were recorded from lineside in the late 1980s & early 1990s when Austrian Railways were still using some delightful old technology. Each DVD provides over one hour of viewing.

Part Four begins at Ybbs a/d Donau: a derailed freight train is unloaded with help from an unusual vehicle (for the railway). At Wieselburg a/d Erlauf we find narrow gauge ‘rollwagen’ being loaded – this labour-intensive process ended when the narrow gauge line was rebuilt to allow standard gauge wagons to run through to Gresten. A short cab ride on the Mariazellerbahn is followed by visits to the Donauuferbahn at Sarmingstein & Persenbeug, the Waldviertelbahn at Gmünd and the standard gauge at Sigmundsherberg. We finally reach Vienna and visit the Südbahnhof and “Das Heizhaus”, the Strasshof railway museum.

Technical Notes

Most scenes on this DVD were recorded in S-VHS format during the late 1980s and early 1990s using a Sharp VL-S860 videocamera. Overlaid sub-titles have been added to inform the viewer, but following the title sequence and a simple menu there is no music and no commentary – the trains provide the sound track!
